The Duke rides again, Pilgrim

Years ago The Kinks wrote a song called "Celluloid Heroes" and how "Celluloid heroes never grow old and never really die." That may be true in the minds of hardcore fans of a particular actor, but many other former screen icons suffer perhaps the cruelest fate of all: they are forgotten as time moves on , all but invisible to current movie goers raised on "Star Wars" and "American Pie."

That fate will not happen to screen legend John Wayne, thanks to his daughter-in-law Gretchen Wayne and her son Chris. On Tuesday night at the American Film Institute theatre in Silver Spring, Gretchen Wayne donated the cowboy hat worn by John Wayne in the western classic "Hondo,", to the Smithsonian Institute. Following the ceremony during which Ms. Wayne jokingly said she was pleased to remove this "ratty old hat" from her closet, a restored version of the film was shown in the beautiful movie house run by proprietor Murray Horwitz.

It was easy to see why John Wayne's work deserves to be brought to the attention of the youth of America. His strength, courage, commitment to basic values of decency are needed now more than ever. "Hondo" may not quite rank up there with "Stagecoach" or "The Shootist" as one of Wayne's very best, but it was nominated for two academy awards and was lauded for showing Apache Indians in a noble and humane light. Without the seeds planted by "Hondo" there may never have been a "Dances with Wolves" or "Jeremiah Johnson." (One of Robert Redford's best films, kids.)

At the AFI, Gretchen Wayne was clearly pleased to take part in keeping a legend from fading to black in cinematic importance. "We have to remember John Wayne was the symbol of American patriotism and courage for decades, a man who made over 154 films and always defended this country with an unwavering loyalty. His bigger than life persona even carries on today with the John Wayne Cancer Institute."

There are 3 more restored Wayne films that will be shown at the AFI in the near future: "The High and Mighty," "Island in the Sky" and "McLintock." In case you are Wondering, Ms. Wayne doesn't own the rights to classics such as "Stagecoach" and "Red River," but hopefully they will be restored and promoted as well.

And the four new restored films will soon be out on DVD and the Wayne's are donating copies to the USO so that soldiers in the Middle East and elsewhere can watch something other than television news, which soldiers attending the "Hondo" screening say is a welcomed relief. Several United States Marines wounded in Iraq were invited to the screening and received a big applause when Gretchen Wayne acknowledged them from the podium.

So thanks to Gretchen Wayne and her son Chris, "The Duke" is one "Celluloid Hero" who will never die.
