"Mein Ehrgeiz ist unverändert groß"
Er ist der einzige deutsche Nationalspieler bei einem englischen Topclub und beim FC Chelsea seit über drei Jahren eine feste Größe. Im ausführlichen Interview äußert sich Michael Ballack zur Bundesliga und zur Premier League, zu persönlichen Plänen - und zu "Nebengeräuschen" des Fußballs.


bundesliga.de: Herr Ballack, Sie spielen jetzt das vierte Jahr in der Premier League. Wie sieht Ihre fußballerische Lebensplanung allgemein aus?

Michael Ballack: Ich möchte gerne spielen, so lange ich gesund bin, mir Fußball Spaß macht und das natürlich auch meine Leistung hergibt. Dabei die großen Turniere mit einzubeziehen, ist nicht ganz einfach. Bei der EURO 2012 wäre ich 35 - dahingehend muss man eher von Jahr zu Jahr planen. Aber grundsätzlich habe ich zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt keine Gedanken ans Aufhören, weder im Verein noch in der Nationalmannschaft. Andererseits ist die langjährige Planung auch nicht mehr da. Mein Ehrgeiz, weitere große sportliche Ziele zu erreichen, ist unverändert vorhanden.

bundesliga.de: Ihre eigene Karriere verlief geradlinig: von Chemnitz aus über Kaiserslautern, Leverkusen und den FC Bayern erst mit 29 Jahren zu einem Topclub in der derzeit stärksten Liga Europas - ein Muster auch für andere?

Ballack: Selbst bin ich damit sehr gut zurechtgekommen, rückblickend war das der richtige Weg. Wobei ich natürlich nicht weiß, wie die Entwicklung gewesen wäre, wenn ich eines der früheren Auslandsangebote angenommen hätte. Genauso kann ich aus dieser für mich guten Erfahrung keinem anderen Spieler etwas raten. Wenn heute ein 20-Jähriger ein Riesenangebot aus dem Ausland bekommt, muss er für sich entscheiden: Will ich diese Herausforderung schon jetzt annehmen? Wie sehen die Alternativen aus? Und letztlich gehört zu allem auch ein wenig Glück.

bundesliga.de: Wie fällt Ihre Zwischenbilanz für den Lebensabschnitt in England aus?

Ballack: Ein solcher Schritt ist, wie gesagt, auch immer eine persönliche Herausforderung, nicht nur in sportlicher Hinsicht. Nach einer gewissen Eingewöhnungszeit, die inzwischen natürlich längst Vergangenheit ist, sind meine Erfahrungen sehr gut. Mit der gesamten Familie fühlen wir uns hier sehr wohl. Als wir ein Haus gefunden hatten, die Kinder zur Schule gingen und wir gewisse Abläufe kannten, waren wir hier auch angekommen. Und der englische Fußball macht großen Spaß, auch von dem ganzen Drumherum in den sehr engen Stadien ohne Zäune. Das fasziniert jeden Spieler.

bundesliga.de: Trifft die Bezeichnung als beste Liga der Welt zu? Und durch welche Elemente wird diese Einschätzung gestützt?

Ballack: In erster Linie macht natürlich die Qualität der Spieler den Unterschied aus. Auch die Bundesliga bietet hervorragende Voraussetzungen von der Infrastruktur mit wunderbaren, fast immer ausverkauften Stadien und tollen Fans und allem was sonst noch dazugehört. Viele Topspieler gehen aber vor allem nach England, weil dort der Reiz am größten ist, sportlich wie finanziell. Und das hebt natürlich das Niveau der Premier League, was sich auch im internationalen Vergleich in den letzten Jahren in der Champions League gezeigt hat.

bundesliga.de: Geht die herausragende sportliche Qualität über die vier bestimmenden Clubs ManU, Liverpool, Chelsea und Arsenal hinaus?

Ballack: Diese Clubs haben sicher eine Ausnahmestellung und waren in den vergangenen Jahren dominierend. Dass im Moment keine andere Mannschaft in diese Phalanx einbrechen kann, zeigt den unglaublich hohen Level, auf dem diese vier Teams spielen.

bundesliga.de: Wie bewerten Sie das Niveau der Clubs aus der zweiten Tabellenhälfte in Premier League und Bundesliga?

Ballack: Die Ligen sind in dieser Hinsicht nur schwer zu vergleichen, weil der Fußball ein anderer ist. Auf jeden Fall sind Mannschaften aus dem unteren Teil der Premier League robuster, viel körperbetonter, und sie setzen auf andere taktische Mittel, um sich zu behaupten.

bundesliga.de: Was muss ein Profi außer sportlicher Qualität mitbringen, um in der Premier League zu bestehen?

Ballack: Neben dieser fußballerischen Klasse und mentaler Stärke vor allem eine gute physische Präsenz - mehr als in jeder anderen Liga in Europa. Robustheit auch außerhalb des Platzes ist wichtig, damit sich ein Spieler nicht beeindrucken lässt von den Nebengeräuschen des Fußballs.

bundesliga.de: Ist der Druck für Spieler im Laufe Ihrer Karriere gestiegen?

Ballack: Der Druck ist größer geworden, und er wird noch weiter wachsen. Durch die Breite der Berichterstattung wird das Ganze immer transparenter. Schon jetzt wird jedes einzelne Wort auf die Goldwaage gelegt, selbst etwas eher lapidar Dahergesagtes. Jeder, außer Franz Beckenbauer, muss am nächsten Tag Erklärungen abgeben oder etwas zurücknehmen, obwohl er das gar nicht so gemeint hat. Die Aufmerksamkeit für einen Spieler ist heute enorm. Und nicht immer reicht das Gegenargument, dass er dafür doch auch sehr gut bezahlt wird. Nicht in jedem Fall geht so etwas an Profis spurlos vorbei, die nach wie vor die Hauptakteure sind.

bundesliga.de: Sind junge Spieler bei der Nationalmannschaft über die Nachwuchsleistungszentren der Bundesliga-Clubs für diese Aufgabe gut gewappnet?

Ballack: Allgemein werden Spieler heutzutage auch in Deutschland früher darauf vorbereitet, was sie im Profifußball erwartet - sicherlich besser als früher, obwohl ich selbst in Ostdeutschland eine gute und optimal abgestimmte Schule durchlaufen konnte. Was Professionalität und Leistungsdiagnostik betrifft, bekommen die Jugendlichen auch bei den Bundesliga-Vereinen schon mit 16, 17 Jahren alle erdenkliche Unterstützung.

bundesliga.de: Wie wesentlich ist auch für einen Routinier wie Sie noch eine positive Rückmeldung von außen?

Ballack: Bestätigung und Anerkennung ist immer wichtig, im Fußball wie in jedem anderen Job auch. Wir stehen ständig im Fokus und bekommen somit regelmäßig unsere öffentliche Bewertung - also Daumen hoch oder Daumen runter.

bundesliga.de: Erleben Sie Ihre große Popularität in der Wahlheimat anders als zuhause in Deutschland?

Ballack: Dass ich in dieser Millionen-Stadt London mit ihren vielen Prominenten auf der Straße weniger erkannt werde als zum Beispiel in München, kann ich nicht sagen. Der Fußball ist halt allgegenwärtig in der Welt. Allein in London sind fünf Premier-League-Clubs beheimatet. Ich kann mich in London in der Öffentlichkeit bewegen wie auch in Deutschland - dieses Fanatische wie vielleicht in südeuropäischen Ländern und in Südamerika gibt es hier nicht so sehr. Die Ausnahmen sind auch Teil meines Jobs und Teil meines Lebens. Daran gewöhnt man sich mit der Zeit, auch weil man weiß: Es kommt von deinen Fans, ist also nichts Schlimmes, sondern grundsätzlich erfreulich.

The only current member of the national squad playing in the Premier League, Ballack spoke in interview with bundesliga.de about the differences between the English and German top flights, the price of fame and much more besides.

bundesliga.de: Michael Ballack, you're now in your fourth season in the Premier League. What general plans do you have for the rest of your footballing career?

Michael Ballack: I'd like to keep playing for as long as I feel fit and am still enjoying it, and of course as long as my level of performance stays up to scratch. Planning in terms of the big tournaments is not so straightforward any more. I'd be 35 by the time EURO 2012 comes around, so it's more a case of thinking from year to year now. Basically though, at this moment in time I've no intention of calling it a day either at club or international level. On the other hand, I'm not making any long-term plans either. In terms of major sporting targets, I'm as ambitious as ever.

bundesliga.de: Your own career path has followed a clearly-defined upward curve, from Chemnitz via Kaiserslautern, Leverkusen and FC Bayern to one of the top clubs in the strongest league in Europe at the moment, making the move there at the age of 29. Is that an example for others to follow?

Ballack: It worked out well for me and looking back, it was the right approach to take. Of course, I don't know how things might have turned out if I'd taken up one of the offers to move abroad at an earlier stage. So in that sense I can't advise other players on the basis of my own personally positive experience. If a 20-year-old gets a fantastic offer from abroad today, it's a decision he has to make for himself: Do I want to take this on right now? What are the alternatives? And at the end of the day, there's always a measure of luck involved as well.

bundesliga.de: What's your view at this stage of your time in England?

Ballack: Taking a step like that is always going to be a personal challenge, and not just in footballing terms. After an initial settling-in period, which is long past now of course, the experience has been very good. My family feel at home here. Once we'd found a house, got the children into school and familiarised ourselves with certain routines, we'd pretty much arrived. And the football in England is very enjoyable, also in terms of the atmosphere, with the crowd on top of you and no perimeter fences in the stadiums. That's fascinating for the players.

bundesliga.de: Does it deserve its reputation as the best league in the world? And what is that reputation based on?
세계 최고의 리그라는 명성에 걸맞나요? 그 명성은 어디에 기반을 두고 있나요?

Ballack: First and foremost of course, it's the quality of the players. The Bundesliga has a top-rate infrastructure as well, with wonderful stadiums which are almost always sold out, and great fans and all the rest of it. But a lot of top players choose to go to England, because that's the biggest draw, in both sporting and financial terms. That in turn improves the standard of the Premier League, as can be witnessed at international level by looking at the final stages of the Champions League over the past few years.
첫째 무엇보다도 물론 그건 선수들의 우수함입니다. 분데스리가도 거의 언제나 매진되는 훌륭한 스타디움과 멋진 팬들과 그 밖의 모든 것들, 최고 수준의 기반시설을 갖추고 있습니다. 그러나 최고 수준의 선수들이 많이 잉글랜드로 가기로 선택하는 것은 그곳이 스포츠적인 측면에서나 재정적인 측면에서나 가장 매력이 있기 때문입니다. 지난 몇 년간 CL의 막바지를 보면 알 수 있듯이 이건 다시 EPL의 수준을 국제적인 수준에서 향상시킵니다.

bundesliga.de: Does that excellent quality extend beyond the big four of Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal?
그런 우수함이 맨체스터 유나이티드, 리버풀, 첼시, 그리고 아스날이라는 빅4 이외에도 해당되는 겁니까? 

Ballack: They're certainly very strongly positioned, and have been dominant in recent years. The fact that no other club has as yet been able to challenge that dominance is testimony to the incredibly high level those four teams are operating at.

bundesliga.de: How would you compare the sides in the lower half of the Premier League with their equivalents in the Bundesliga?

Ballack: It's difficult to compare the two leagues in that way, because it's two different styles of football. The teams in the lower half of the Premier League are certainly more rugged, with a much more physical style, and they have a different tactical approach as well.
두 리그를 그런 식으로 비교하긴 어렵습니다. 왜냐하면 축구의 스타일이 다르니까요. EPL의 하위팀들이 확실히 더 강인하고 훨씬 더 피지컬한 스타일입니다. 그리고 전술적으로도 차이가 있습니다.

bundesliga.de: Footballing ability apart, what other qualities does a player need to flourish in the Premier League?

Ballack: Alongside first-rate technique and psychological durability, it's a strong physical presence above all - more so than in any other league in Europe. You need to be strong-willed off the pitch as well, to deal with all the background noise attached to the game.

bundesliga.de: Has the pressure on players increased since you started out as a professional?

Ballack: The pressure has grown and it's going to keep growing. The breadth of media coverage is making everything more and more transparent. Even now, every word, however throwaway, is weighed up for its significance. Unless you're Franz Beckenbauer, you end up issuing a clarification or retraction the following day of a distorted version of something you've said. Players are under incredibly close scrutiny these days. And the counter-argument, that you're paid very well for it, doesn't always add up. The footballer is still the main player in the game, and these things don't always blow over without leaving their mark on him.

bundesliga.de: Are the younger players in the national team suitably prepared by the club academies to cope with all that?

Ballack: In general, players in Germany are now educated earlier about what to expect if they turn professional. It's certainly better than it was before, although I was able to go to a good school myself in East Germany, with an optimally adapted schedule. As far as professionalism and performance analysis goes, 16- and 17-year-olds at the Bundesliga clubs are getting every conceivable kind of support.

Ballack: Recognition and praise are always important, in football as in any other job. We're constantly in the limelight, so public ratings are a fact of life – be it a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

bundesliga.de: Do you experience your own personal popularity in a different way in England from back home in Germany?

Ballack: I can't say that I'm less often recognised in the teeming metropolis of London than for example back on the streets of Munich. Football is omnipresent in the world. London alone has five clubs in the Premier League. I can go about my business in public here as I would in Germany. The fanatical element you might find in southern Europe or South America isn't as commonplace here. The exceptions are part of the job, and part of my life. You get used to it with time, partly because you know it's coming from your fans, so it's not a bad thing – in principle, it's something to be happy about.
