Do you think Werder will do well in the UEFA Champions League? We enjoyed the highlights last year, such as beating Real Madrid, but by and large we were not consistent enough, though that was almost impossible because of the many injuries. Werder belong in the Champions League. If everyone's healthy, we have a great team. We're always good for a surprise, and this season we hope to reach the knockout rounds and annoy the big clubs - again. But I'd have to be a megalomaniac to claim Werder could win the Champions League. Bayern Munich can do it, though. They are the only German team who have a realistic chance. |

Have you ever regretted openly criticising a team mate? There have certainly been cases where I said something I shouldn't. But I always give my all - so I'm entitled to ask that of the other players. If I have brought up a subject behind closed doors numerous times and nothing happens...you sometimes have to make an issue public. I stand by that. I'm annoyed if not everyone gives one hundred per cent. It irks me almost as much as losing games when we don't have to. I don't mind losing to a better team, but I cannot stand dominating and then letting a game slip out of our grasp. |

That's their right - but first they have to be better than I am. And what else is the coach supposed to say? If he says eight places in the starting XI have already been decided, he soon won't find 20 players for the squad. It's not as if I have been a regular because I have such a great haircut. I was played because I have done well in the league over many seasons. If I feel the team need me, I will continue playing for Germany. Otherwise I'd rather retire from international duty. I'm not the type who will travel through half of Europe then sit down on the bench and hope to be brought on to meet a certain number of appearances. |

You have played in a televised poker tournament. What is the attraction? Are you a true gambler? We play poker on the Werder team coach because travelling is so boring. Poker is fun, and there's a certain thrill. Part of the appeal is that you can win with any hand if you sell it well. Unfortunately I'm not so good at that. Sometimes it works, but I'm not the world's greatest bluffer. I have to wait until I'm dealt a really good hand. Playing on television was fun, but it was strange knowing people watching at home could see my cards. |
