NewsCenter 5's Natalie Jacobson was asked to be his subject and took advantage of the invitation to bring his story to you. Kintsler is the country's current preeminent portrait artist. Five of the recent presidents sought out Kintsler to paint their official portraits. The stars of Hollywood also look to Kintsler. "I believe as Sargent did, you first learn your craft -- otherwise you become a mannerist," Kintsler said. Kintsler said that he knew as a child he was destined for the art world. He dropped out of high school to ink for newspapers and then moved to comics. But when The Saturday Evening Post stopped crediting the cover illustrators, he knew the golden age of illustration was over. "People ask is the likeness right, well that's not where I'm coming from," he said. Kinstler talks constantly with his subject. It's part of his way of getting a sense of someone and partly to keep their faces animated. "It is an illusion, otherwise take a photo. What do you need me for?" Kinstler said. "I talk to people keep their faces moving. I trust my emotions, and I lean strongly on my memory. When I go back to the studio, I say, 'yes that looks like Natalie.' But that is not what I am trying to say." What he is trying to say is perhaps best explained with the story of John Wayne. "Flattery is offensive to me. You don't want people to say, ' You got him 20 years young.' You want people to say, ' You have gotten the best of him.' My portrait of John Wayne wasn't accurate, but as his son said, 'You have gotten the quintessential image of my father.' The truth is, that portrait was not that accurate, but it felt like him," Kinstler said. Katherine Hepburn may have been Kinstler's greatest challenge. She drove him crazy. He actually quit working on her for two years. # by Olsen | 2005/10/14 18:07 | 존 웨인(John Wayne)
